So your child is taking a Project Lead the Way class? This can be exciting and nerve-racking for students. The class is different, focusing more on the basics of engineering. It incorporates skills from many of their other classes: Art, Math, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and even Health. But it can be hard. Many might consider it an advanced class merely for the topics addressed. Work is approached in a different manner, rooted in problem-based learning. This means that students will not just be learning the concepts, but they will be putting them into actions to develop solutions. Students will complete a combination of online and offline work as well. We do use computers in PLTW and while many students are good with tablets and smartphones, I frequently see them struggle with using a traditional computer.
In PLTW, failure is most definitely an option.
"I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed." - Michael Jordan
So how can you, as parents, best help them succeed?

This site is designed for students, but available for parents too. Check out the above resources, particularly the Website Features page to help understand how students use the site. Feel free to bookmark the site and check in as often as you want. Check out the Canvas for Parents link to see some useful tips to help you better understand Canvas from a parent's perspective. More resources will be added in the future to better assist students. I welcome questions and concerns from parents so send them my way so I can help.
For supplies, only a notebook and pencil are truly required. Students will be provided with an engineering notebook that will stay with them if they take PLTW both years they are at Truman Middle School. Student laptops can be useful, but are not as powerful as the computers in our classroom. Plus, student laptop batteries can be conserved by using the lab computers.
